October 8, 2021, marks the 150th anniversary of the horrific fires that devastated Northeastern Wisconsin. These wildfires, often referred to as the Peshtigo Fire took an estimated 1,500 to 2,000 lives.

In the days following the fires, Frank Tilton, Green Bay Advocate editor compiled eyewitness accounts of the death, destruction, and devastation. The Brown County Historical Society has reprinted Tilton’s book, along with two articles by Prof. Joseph Moran.

Founded in 1899, the Brown County Historical Society’s mission is to preserve and share the rich history of Northeastern Wisconsin. To commemorate the 150th anniversary of the fires, the Society published the “The Great Fires in Wisconsin of 1871” to deliver this significant historical material to a  wide audience.
